Steaua-Rapid 0-2 Etapa 25 Divizia A

Just two days after the Middlesbrough defeat, Steaua lost another game, this time against Rapid, in the last game of the 25th domestic round.
The game was played on the «National» stadium, the guests dominated the encounter and got a win thanks to the two goals scored in the first half by Pancu (min.21) and V. Modovan (min.31). Our players had a low morale after the shock defeat in the UEFA Cup just two days before and obviously could not get over it in such a short time. Our play lacked vision, spirit and purpose, qualities that our fans saw aplenty in most of our previous games this season. This was the third defeat for us in the current domestic season and we are third on the table at the moment, but we also have two games in hand. We have to take on Pandurii Tg. Jiu and FCM Bacau to be level for games played with the rest of the teams. The first game will be played on Wednesday May 3rd 2006, at 2030h on the “National” stadium against Pandurii Tg. Jiu who is currently next to last on the table.

Middlesbrough FC may need a few days to get their breath back after completing a stunning 4-3 aggregate victory against FC Steaua Bucuresti at the Riverside stadium.
After losing 1-0 in the first leg in Bucharest, Middlesbrough went two goals behind on home soil before staging an incredible comeback and winning the game with Massimo Maccarone's late header.
Steve McClaren, Middlesbrough manager:I have not got a clue how we did it! We showed magnificent resilience, character and attitude. I thought lightning could not strike twice in the same place but it has [Middlesbrough won their quarter-final tie against FC Basel 1893 with a late Maccarone goal after being three goals down on aggregate]. I cannot praise the players and the supporters enough. We have got to the final the hard way, so let’s go one stage further and win it.
Cosmin Olaroiu
, Steaua coach:We believed that we had qualified too early. We became frightened, especially after Middlesbrough scored the first goal. The pressure was probably too great and we conceded stupid goals. I think that our lack of experience at this level was decisive. The players must understand that this was an unfortunate moment in their lives, but also that life goes on.

Middlesbrough-Steaua 4-2 Uefa Cup Semi-finals

Steaua lost the away leg of the aggregate against Middlesbrough last Thursday by four goals to two in the UEFA Cup semifinal, which means the English side has progressed to the final of the competition.
Our team started the game very well and we were two goals ahead after just 24 minutes of play, goals scored by Dica and Goian. The hosts pulled a goal back in the 33th minute and it was all to play for in the second half. Unfortunately our players were unable to manage the overall advantage of two goals they had at half time on Thursday and were completely dominated in the second half by the very motivated Steve McLaren’s players.
Boro had a dream second half and scored three goals without conceding any so our dream of getting into a new European Cup final turned into a nightmare.
What happened in the last minutes of this game was truly UNBELIEVABLE! The hosts scored the winner when they needed it most, in the 89th minute, just as they did in the quarterfinal aggregate against the Swiss side Basel.
This meant that for Steaau the dream of playing another European Cup final exactly 20 years after winning the supreme continental trophy in Seville was truly over. It is a great shame for Steaua and for all the Romanian football!
Even so, let us look at this as an achievement for our club and let us all agree that STEAUA is the one who made the Romanian football once again highly regarded in Europe just by getting once more into a continental cup semifinal!
We must also look back and agree that this is still the greatest achievement at European level for any Romanian team after 1989, so once more, congratulations to STEAUA BUCHAREST for this!

Steaua-Farul Constanta 3-0 Etapa 24 Divizia A

Steaua-Middlesbrough 1-0 Uefa Cup Semi-finals

Win gives Olaroiu mixed feelingsThursday, 20 April 2006
FC Steaua Bucuresti coach Cosmin Olaroiu was left to rue missed chances after the home side failed to capitalise on their dominance in the UEFA Cup Cup semi-final first leg against Middlesbrough FC. Nicolae Dica scored the only goal on the half-hour in Bucharest, and the English club's manager Steve McClaren agreed the margin could have been far greater.
Cosmin Olaroiu, Steaua coach:As I expected, it was a tough match against a very good team. We won but missed a number of good chances in the second half and you cannot afford to do that at this level. We did not concede, which is important too. We know the second leg will be hard but I'm confident we'll keep our composure and remain disciplined.
Steve McClaren, Middlesbrough coach:My players are obviously tired: this was our 56th official game this season and fourth in the last eight days. We played well in the first half, had some chances, and thought we had everything under control. It could have been worse in the second half and a 2-0 or 3-0 scoreline would have been almost impossible to overturn. But next week will be a totally different game. We know Steaua have a very good away record, but we can and have to score goals.
George Boateng, Middlesbrough midfielderIt could have been worse but we've been in more difficult situations in this competition and won through. I'm not saying it's easy, but we will be very confident going into the second leg. We will have Gareth Southgate and Mark Viduka back, so it's looking positive.

Olaroiu looking forward to final

FC Steaua Bucuresti and Middlesbrough FC will both be without key forwards for tonight's UEFA Cup semi-final first leg in the Romanian capital but neither side is looking for excuses.
Serious concernsWhile Steaua knew they would again be missing Victoras Iacob, who is nearing fitness after a shoulder problem, they also have serious concerns about Andrei Cristea. He has suffered a knee injury and a decision on his fitness will be left until as late as possible. Middlesbrough, meanwhile, lost in-form Australia striker Mark Viduka to a troublesome thigh just before setting out from England.
Time to restStill, a 45,000-capacity crowd at the Lia Manoliu stadium will expect Steaua to overcome their striking woes as they stand on the verge of emulating their European Champion Clubs' Cup-winning team of 1986. After the high of defeating city rivals AFC Rapid Bucuresti in the quarter-finals, the players were also given two days off with the postponement of their weekend fixture against FCM Bacau.
'Worked hard'"We have worked hard and suffered a lot to get to the semi-finals," coach Cosmin Olaroiu .
